A Sacred Space . . . The Celebration of Life . . . Comfort and Peace
The Columbarium at the Cathedral is a 144-niche facility available to members of the Cathedral as well as to members of other parishes of the Diocese. The Columbarium is a beautiful and sacred place which enjoys a secure and peaceful location in the lower level of the Cathedral, next to the Peace Chapel. The Chapel provides direct access to the Columbarium and presents an ideal setting for intimate memorial services.
Cremation is recognized within the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is a part, to be entirely proper and right. The Episcopal Church views cremation as in no way conflicting with the doctrine of the resurrection of the body.
Each niche accommodates two urns or receptacles suitable for containment of human ashes. To date, almost half of the niches have been sold. The per niche cost is $1,500.00. An additional charge of $250.00 is made at the time of need for the placement of each container and includes the cost of engraving the fascia-plate with the name of the deceased and appropriate data. For further information or to schedule a tour, please call Fran Brown or Mary Jane Hall at 410.467.1399 or 1.800.443.1399.
Thoughts on the Columbarium From Bishop Ihloff . . .
Over the years of my parish ministry, I frequently had opportunity to observe the joy and genuine comfort derived from the presence in the Church or on its grounds of a columbarium. Knowing that a loved one will forever be in close proximity to the worshipping community, surrounded by nusic and prayer, brings immense comfort. . . .
. . . Some years ago [Nancy and I] both decided to be cremated: it makes sense ecologically, it brings to pass the concept of "dust to dust, ashes to ashes" in a more immediate (and for us more appealing) way, and it would enable us to be buried in the church.
Scattering ashes has never been so appealing; we have found our center in the church community and we want to celebrate that locus for all time. . . .
